MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO!

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPACT YOU ARE HAVING EVERY DAY ON THE CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE- MAYBE EVEN SOME ADULTS!

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TODAY THAT HELPS THE CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE BECOME THE ADULTS YOU WANT THEM TO BE?

Those of you that I work with or follow my Social Media pages will know that one of my favourite sayings is Monkey See Monkey Do - I talk about it a lot!

However, I never really go into deep detail unless it’s through conversation so I thought I would create this blog to do a ‘deep dive’ into exactly what it is I am banging on about!

Let me start by talking briefly about the ‘Nature V Nurture’ debate, this is something that has always been, and will always be a talking point in regards to understanding exactly what is the most powerful factor in our development as human beings.

Usually this subject and discussion arises when we are talking about extremes; elite athletes or depraved criminals, however, I want to bring it to the surface to get your minds ticking about what really matters in our own day to day lives- our own children and young people that we parent, care for and teach. The reason I say parent, care for AND teach is because no matter which of these roles you categorise yourself in, make no mistake about it- you are fulfilling ALL of these roles EVERY day!

So, back to Nature V Nurture, my overarching point on this is this- the only thing that REALLY matters to us as the adults surrounding our children, our next generation, is the nurture we provide. We have limited control over what nature gives our children, but we do have massive control over how they interact with the ever changing world around them; their attitudes, beliefs and understanding of what they see, hear and feel.

The way I see it is this- it's our job to stay on the ball, look after ourselves and our own mental and physical health, learn as much as we possibly can about what emotions actually are, what feelings are attached to these emotions, and how to regulate all of this appropriately- to become emotionally intelligent! If we do this, then we can pass this valuable knowledge and skills onto the next generation to support our society in becoming more rounded, caring, understanding, kind and, ultimately, more emotionally intelligent, which may create the overarching impact we are striving to achieve.

Look, to be blunt, you chose to be a teacher, carer, parent, support worker etc and you chose to do this for a reason- because you want to have a positive impact on the world you leave behind, leave your footprint, spread your knowledge, love and kindness onto the little people you interact with. So step up, learn what you need to learn to support those little walking, talking sponges make sense of the world inside of them, the world around them, and to help them make the universe a brighter and kinder place to be!

In the instant, bonkers, fast paced, never enough and ever changing world we find ourselves in - strive to be the clarity that they need EVERY day.

How do we do this I hear you ask as your head feels like it is going to explode with this particular perspective?

Well, I will leave you with a simple quote that brings us full circle…..

“What we are teaches the children more than what we say, so we must be what we want our children to be” ~ Joseph Chilton

IT. STARTS. WITH. YOU!

Monkey See Monkey Do, remember!
